In cases where a filling can’t quite offer enough protection for a decayed or damaged tooth, an inlay or onlay can fortify your tooth.

How Do Inlays and Onlays Differ From Fillings?

Like fillings, inlays and onlays are restorative elements for a tooth. However, they are more substantial than a filling, acting as a solution for damage or decay that has spread across a large surface area.

FAQs

What Is An Inlay?

An inlay fills a cavity that has arisen as a result of decay. Cavities are holes in your teeth, through which bacteria can enter and cause internal damage to the nerve of a tooth. An inlay is bonded within the tooth and boosts the strength of a tooth after it has been cleaned and sealed. Inlays are used for teeth fundamental to chewing, such as those at the back of the mouth (molars).

What Is An Onlay?

An onlay is placed on the cusp of a tooth the raised part of a tooth above the root. Inlays are used when a tooth is chipped or broken but do not warrant more involved treatment with, for example, a crown.

What Are Inlays and Onlays Made From?

We use a variety of materials to create these durable restorations, including porcelain, metal, and composite resin.
